Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 22, 2026

This policy explains what information BoatCalculators (“we”, “us”) collects when you use boatcalculators.com, how we use it and the choices you have. The site is run by the BoatCalculators team, which you can reach at [email protected]. You can use every calculator without an account and without giving us your name or email address.

Calculator inputs

The places, distances, speeds, fuel use and prices you enter are used to calculate your results in your browser. To compute a route, your browser sends the start and end coordinates to our routing server (api.boatcalculators.com).

Shared trip links

When you use Share trip, the trip details are stored in the link itself, in the part after the “#” sign. Browsers do not send that part to our server, and our analytics excludes it. Anyone who has the link can open the plan, so share it only with people you choose.

Analytics

We use cookieless analytics from PostHog to understand how the site is used and to find problems. It counts page visits, referring websites, device information and calculator actions such as successful calculations, errors and sharing. We do not record sessions or screen interactions.

The same analytics also measures page speed: how quickly each page shows its main content, how much its layout shifts and how quickly it responds to taps and key presses. Each page view sends these timings once, with short labels of the elements involved in the slowest response and the largest layout shift, made of their tag, id and class names (for example, “button#from-button”), and the site and file name of the script that ran longest during that response. It never sends page text or anything you type, and it stops when you turn analytics off or your browser asks not to be tracked.

The same analytics also records your approximate country as a two-letter code, such as “GB”. While analytics is on, your browser gets this code once per page view from Cloudflare, which delivers this site and already sees your connection. Only the code is added to the analytics events.

Nothing is stored in your browser for analytics: no cookies and no identifiers. To count unique visitors, PostHog’s servers combine your IP address and browser information with a secret value that changes every day into a one-way code, so visits on different days are not linked. PostHog processes this data in its US cloud.

We also use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page visits and measures how fast pages load. It does not use cookies or store anything in your browser.

Your choice: use the Privacy & analytics button on our pages to turn PostHog analytics off or back on; we save your choice in your browser so we can respect it. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, PostHog analytics stays off automatically. This choice does not apply to Cloudflare Web Analytics. The calculators work either way.

Service providers

  • Cloudflare delivers and protects the site, processes IP addresses and request data to do so, and provides Cloudflare Web Analytics.
  • Our hosting servers keep standard access logs (IP address, time, browser and requested address, which for route requests includes the coordinates) for up to 30 days for security and troubleshooting.
  • OpenFreeMap serves the map tiles. Your browser requests them directly, which shares your IP address and the map area being viewed with that service.
  • PostHog provides the analytics described above.

Cookies and local storage

We do not use advertising cookies, and our analytics does not use cookies or local storage. Your browser may keep your analytics choice and display preferences, such as fuel units, so the calculators remember them. Cloudflare may set strictly necessary cookies to protect the site from abuse.

How we use information

We use the information above to provide and improve the calculators, fix errors, keep the site secure and understand usage. We do not sell personal information and do not share it for targeted advertising. Analytics events are deleted according to PostHog’s data-retention settings (one year on its free plan), and server logs are kept for up to 30 days.

Email

If you email us, we receive your email address and message and use them to reply and to fix the problem you report.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, for example in the European Union, the United Kingdom or California, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information about you and to object to its use. Where EU or UK law applies, we process this information on the basis of our legitimate interest in providing, securing and improving the site; you can object at any time, and you can turn PostHog analytics off with the Privacy & analytics button. Because we do not collect names, please include details that help us find the data when you contact us. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Children

BoatCalculators is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.

International processing

Our service providers may process information in the United States and other countries, including PostHog, which processes our analytics in its US cloud.

Changes

We may update this policy when our tools or providers change. The date at the top shows the latest version.
